2011: And I'm Still Standing

Today the sun was out in full force, breaking through the fluffy grey-white clouds. Despite the coldness of the day (-13°C with the wind chill), the sun brought a much-needed lift to the day, as well as my spirits.

After being away from the office for almost two weeks, it was rough trying to get back into the swing of working. While it was great to spend Christmas with my nephews (7 month old twins who had no clue what was going on), travelling over the holidays is exhausting. But with only a minor delay (20 minutes) in departing from Montreal on Christmas Eve, and a rather rough landing in Halifax that had my heart in my throat, I can’t complain.

2010 was a year of change. After living in Ottawa (Ontario) for over 10 years, my heart led me to Sherbrooke (Québec). I have done my best to make myself at home here, participating in group exhibitions, public readings and making my debut as a singer-songwriter. Two of my short stories were also published. These successes helped me to nurse some of the creative wounds experienced throughout the year, and encouraged me to press ahead no matter what.

The New Year is upon us, and I am not one to make resolutions. All I try to do is to put my best foot forward each and every day. For me, that means writing each morning, putting some time in at the piano, getting to the easel, staying active (how long has it been since I’ve been out for a run — and I have a new pair of runners?), spending time with loved ones, keeping in regular contact with friends.

It comes back to being able to focus, as Tony Robbins reminds us: “One reason so few of us achieve what we truly want is that we never direct our focus; we never concentrate our power. Most people dabble their way through life, never deciding to master anything in particular.”

I will do in 2011 as I have done in the past: I will master the life I have now in the present — not in the past or in an untold future — and remain true to myself, to who I am, focusing on what matters most.
