Keeping in Shape

I woke up this morning to a bright sky. The Weather Network indicated a temperature of 1°C. I wasn’t in the mood, but I went for a run. It’s a luxury for me to be “in the mood” to run despite knowing that I’ll feel good afterwards, and that it keeps me active.

Like running, I’m not always in the mood to write. Playing the piano, washing the floors, baking: all ways to put off writing. So sometimes I have to trick myself, tell myself that I’m going to write for 15 or 20 minutes. Once I’m at the page, and writing, there’s a sense of calm, that I am once again laying track. And like running, I’m keeping my writing in shape. Yes, the trick some days is just getting to the page.

I know that today I will have to trick myself to get to the page. This warm March day, the bright skies, this longing to be elsewhere, numerous e-mails I haven’t replied to — tempting distractions to lure me from writing. Despite the temptations, despite not being “in the mood,” I will write.

  1. I know exactly what you mean, even though I don't run. Once I switch on my work in progress, I can settle into it and wonder why I was ever suffering with writers' block in the first place. I have always wanted to run; one day I really might try.
